Culture Secretary outlines plan for a £50 billion boost and a million new jobs by 2030.

The UK is currently in a “golden age” of cinema, with its creative industries thriving, but Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has warned against complacency as she lays out an ambitious vision for further growth. Frazer will speak at the Deloitte and Enders Media and Telecoms 2023 & Beyond conference, where she will unveil her goal to boost the creative sector by £50 billion and create a million additional jobs by 2030.

In her speech, Frazer will highlight the global success of the UK’s film industry, praising the country’s expertise in sound, visual effects, and tech-driven production skills. She will also emphasize the importance of British talent and creative know-how, which has contributed to the demand for high-end British productions internationally.

Frazer will stress that while the UK’s creative sector has flourished, it must adapt to growing global competition. She notes that a “copy and paste” approach to past successes will not suffice in the face of these challenges. The government’s strategy will aim to cultivate talent, support local clusters, and encourage industry-specific growth across the UK.

Key components of the vision include:

Skill Development: Promoting creative skills from primary school through to workforce re-entry, with a focus on music education and apprenticeships.
Regional Growth: Ensuring that support is distributed evenly across the country, building on existing creative hubs like video game development in Dundee and Leamington Spa, and TV production in Birmingham and Leeds.
Sector-Specific Support: Offering targeted initiatives to help specific sub-sectors unlock their potential.
Frazer’s commitment to growing the sector comes as part of a broader government initiative to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of the global creative economy, providing opportunities and career paths for a diverse range of talent across the nation.
