Martin Campbell Says Cavill Would Have Been an Excellent Bond if Daniel Craig Didn’t Exist

James Bond director Martin Campbell has revealed that Henry Cavill gave a “tremendous” audition for the role of 007 in the 2006 reboot Casino Royale. Although the part ultimately went to Daniel Craig, Campbell acknowledged that Cavill, who was just 22 at the time, looked fantastic and showcased impressive acting skills during the audition.

“If Daniel didn’t exist, Henry would have made an excellent Bond,” Campbell said. “He looked great, was in great physical shape, and had the perfect Bond qualities, but he looked a bit young for the role back then.”

While Cavill’s audition was highly praised, Campbell noted that, with Cavill now at 40, he may be too old for a second shot at the iconic role, as Bond actors typically sign multi-film deals that can span several years. The search for the next Bond continues, with casting director Debbie McWilliams recently dismissing younger actors for lacking the “mental capacity” required for the role.
