Police swiftly remove demonstrators after traffic disruptions at key locations
Environmental campaigners from the group Just Stop Oil disrupted traffic across four iconic London bridges on Tuesday afternoon. Protesters began their demonstration at around 4:15pm, targeting Waterloo Bridge, Tower Bridge, London Bridge, and Blackfriars Bridge. The Metropolitan Police quickly intervened, clearing the streets by 5:00pm and managing to disperse the crowds. No arrests were reported.
According to Just Stop Oil, 68 supporters participated in the action, causing severe traffic delays. One protester, Adam Beard, a gardener aged 54, explained his involvement by highlighting the UK government’s failure to follow scientific advice on climate change. He stressed that the continued reliance on oil and gas extraction is putting lives at risk globally, while exacerbating environmental damage.
This protest is part of a broader, ongoing campaign launched on April 24, during which Just Stop Oil has carried out 78 similar actions. Last week, the Metropolitan Police revealed that managing these protests has cost more than £3.5 million.
