The Afghan refugee’s tragic death follows an alleged attack on his ex-partner with a corrosive substance
The body of Abdul Ezedi, whose remains were discovered in the River Thames on Monday, has been officially identified. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the cause of death was drowning, and the case has now been referred to the coroner for further investigation. His family has been informed of the grim news.
Ezedi, an Afghan refugee, was reportedly involved in a disturbing incident last month in Clapham, where he allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend with a burning corrosive substance, severely injuring her. The woman, who was also with her two young children at the time, remains in a stable condition after suffering significant injuries, including the loss of sight in one eye. Police have indicated she is no longer sedated and is slowly recovering.
Commander Jon Savell from the Metropolitan Police commented that investigations into the attack continue, but they have been unable to interview the woman as of yet, as she remains in hospital. Authorities worked quickly to confirm Ezedi’s identity, using evidence from CCTV footage, which indicated that after fleeing the scene, he travelled via public transport and walked along the Thames. Police later determined he had entered the water.
His body was located by the crew of a passing boat at around 4pm on Monday near Tower Bridge. It was recovered by the Metropolitan Police’s Marine Policing Unit, with assistance from the London Fire Brigade.
In the meantime, the woman’s friends have launched a fundraising campaign, expressing hope for her recovery and eventual reunion with her daughters. “She’s a phenomenal mum, and we’re praying for her sight to return,” they shared, noting her determination to heal quickly and return to her children.
